Future of Trove Announced

Back in early January I posted a blog about the bleak future of Trove, with the lack of ongoing funding threatening the continuation of this wonderful free resource.

I warned that "the future of Trove, the National Library of Australia’s public digital archives, is in doubt with just six months funding left.  The library’s director general has revealed that it is facing “very, very big decisions” in the next few months.

The last tranche of funding for Trove, which receives about $5m annually from the Federal Government and has more than 20m hits each year, is set to run out in July. While there remains a possibility that Trove will be thrown a last-minute lifeline in the May budget, that will come just weeks before it could be forced to cease operations."

Happily, news has just been released that in its upcoming May budget, the federal government has promised $33 million over four years to the NLA.  Trove, will also be separately allocated funding of more than $9 million — a move the government said would secure the future of the service for years to come.

A statement from the National Library reads as follows :

The National Library of Australia is deeply grateful for the commitment of the Albanese Government to provide significant ongoing and indexed funding for Australia’s cultural and historical institutions. This allows the Library to focus on providing world-leading services to the Australian community from our physical building and storage facilities in Canberra, and via our digital library, Trove. The funding provides certainty and includes:

  • Sustainable funding for our core operations, to further develop our collections and outreach activities and the services we provide to communities across Australia.
  • Undertake critical ongoing building maintenance to:
    • continue replacing the antiquated heating, ventilation and cooling systems
    • ensure existing storerooms are watertight
    • replace leaking windows, and
    • address urgent safety and code compliance requirements.
  • Extend our storage repository at Hume to store collection material (currently in rented storage that expires in 2025) with ongoing indexed funding to safely house our physical collection (which grows by approximately two kilometres every year) into the future.

This announcement comes as a great relief to all the historians and researchers who have gained so much from the continuing availability of this free online resource made available to all.

Great news indeed.

The Future of Trove

Early in January, I posted that the future of Trove, the National Library of Australia’s public digital archives, is in doubt with just months funding left.

The Society of Australian Genealogists has started a petition asking the Federal Government to fully fund Trove.  The petition states -

"Trove is an online archive that provides access to a huge range of archives free to all Australians. It is the memory house for the nation and imperative for researchers, genealogists, family historians and students. It receives 20 million hits a year and is a vital part of Australian heritage. Currently, funding for Trove expires in July 2023.

We therefore ask the House to fully fund Trove so that the nation's memories can be accessed by all Australians and provides them with the opportunity to understand and know our own history."

The petition already has over 500 signatures and runs until 22 February.  So please click on the link and add your signature to keep this wonderful resource available and free for all.

Trove Tricks

Any long-term reader of this blog will know how much I love Trove.  Over the years I have spent a lot of time researching the site, the newspapers and gazettes especially, and found a great deal of information about various ancestors and their lives.  And all available free for anyone.

I had thought I was a fairly adept user of the Trove search facility and knew many of the tips and tricks for constructing searches :

  • Phrase searches
    • Enclose search terms in quotes, eg:
      • “James Clark"will find only articles with those words, together, in that order.
  • Wildcard searches
    • Specify wild cards or truncate word endings with an * , eg:
      • math*  will find math, maths, mathematics, mathematical etc
  • Boolean searches
    • Use AND, OR and NOT and brackets to create boolean expressions. You can use a minus sign next to the word in place of NOT, eg:
      • "South Australia" AND (elections OR politics) NOT (Adelaide OR Kingston)
      • “Moreton Bay" -Brisbane

I use the phrase search especially frequently to find articles about my ancestors, but this search has a weakness.  Just searching James Clark will find any article with both words anywhere in the article.  The words can be several lines away from each other and thus returns a lot of irrelevant results.  Using the phrase search is much more exact, but it will miss out on a number of relevant articles as well.  My ancestor James Clark was often referred to using his middle name as well - James Nicholas Clark.  Researching all three names as a phrase returns different results, as does using initials, surname first, and so on.  So what phrase searches do I need to do to cover all the bases?  "James Clark", "James Nicholas Clark", "James N. Clark", "J T Clark", "Clark, James", "Clark, J T" - they all return different matches.

What I did not know until very recently, however, was the tilde symbol and how it could be used when searching Trove.

  • Near searches
    • Use the tilde symbol to find words close to each other
      • "James Clark"~2 will find the words James and Clark within two words of each other in any order

So searching "James Clark"~2 will find "James Clark", "James Nicholas Clark", "James N. Clark", and "Clark, James" all in one search.  "J Clark"~2 will find "J Clark", "J T Clark", "Clark, J T".

Using the various search methods certainly makes better use of my time and helps me be more efficient in my searching, and knowing about the tilde search is a wonderful addition to my skills.  It also makes me wonder what other search tricks I'm missing from my toolbox then I search Trove - and all the other databases out there that I use.

Trove : the Future Looks Bleak

The future of Trove, the National Library of Australia’s public digital archives, is in doubt with just six months funding left.  The library’s director general has revealed that it is facing “very, very big decisions” in the next few months.

The last tranche of funding for Trove, which receives about $5m annually from the Federal Government and has more than 20m hits each year, is set to run out in July. While there remains a possibility that Trove will be thrown a last-minute lifeline in the May budget, that will come just weeks before it could be forced to cease operations.

According to the National Library’s modelling, Trove will need about $32m over the next four years to upgrade its digital archival system, which is aging. Introducing a paywall for users is not an option, the National Library’s director general, Marie-Louise Ayres said.

“From the very beginnings of the National Library’s work in the digital space, and we’ve been in this space now for well over 20 years, we have had one great driver – democratising access to our collections and the collections of other cultural institutions and making sure that they’re available to all Australians regardless of where they live, who they are, and their ability to pay,” she said.

“Free access to information is fundamental to libraries, and it is to us. So from our perspective, egalitarian access is what drives us and we have no interest at all in moving to an alternate model.”

Losing free, open access to the many resources Trove has to offer will be an enormous loss to students, historians, genealogists, and the many other people who regularly access the site.  Like many others, I will be eagerly awaiting news on the future of this wonderful resource.

Trove Treasures - Death and Funerals

Over the years I have found a number of fascinating articles and notices on Trove, the Australian newspaper archive created in collaboration between the National Library of Australia and hundreds of partner organisations around Australia.

Death notices, funeral notices and obituaries are among the many useful offerings in the newspaper archive, and whenever I am lucky enough to find such notices they prove a wonderful addition to my records.  Of course not everyone who died had such notices in the papers.  Families had to pay for them, and for many it was beyond their means.  It is always worth checking, however, to see what might be available.

When my great grandfather James Nicholas Clark passed away in 1924 there were two death notices inserted in the newspaper - one from his family and one from the Masonic Lodge of which he was a member.  Had it not been for this Masonic notice, I would never have known that James was a FreeMason.  It is also worth noting the spelling error - the heading of the Masonic notice has CLARG, not CLARK.  The family notice also gives me his occupation - Overseer at Brighton City Council, and both notices give his address and the cemetery in which his grave is located

The 1889 death notice of my ancestor William Pummeroy also gives some valuable information about his life.  The first of the Pummeroy family to migrate to Australia, his death notice not only names the surviving children but notes how long he has resided in the Colony.  Note the daughters are only listed by their married names - only the unmarried daughter Jessie has her first name listed.

My Great-Uncle Alfred Edward Beseler, who died in 1954, had an obituary written in his local newspaper, adding some lovely detail to his life as a local photographer.  Knowing he had an office for his photography sends me looking for building records and rate notices, and knowing his profession in the area had me scouring local newspapers for events he attended and advertising for his business.

So have a look on Trove for what the historic newspapers have for you, and see what details they can provide.  You won't always be lucky, but there may well be unexpected gems of information you can glean.

Trove Upgrade

Many genealogists, especially those in Australia, are familiar with the wonderful website Trove.  Trove, part of the National Library of Australia, contains historic newspapers, Government Gazettes, journals articles and data sets, digitized books, pictures and photos, music and video, maps, diaries and more.  All can be accessed by anyone, completely free.

In mid 2020, the National Library of Australia plans to launch a new, significantly upgraded version of Trove.  And for those of you who would like a sneak peek at the new site, a general public preview will be held from 14-24 February.  Even more, there will be a guided tour of the upgraded website by the Trove team via a free webinar, held this Thursday 6 February from 1-2pm.  You can book in for the webinar here.

As a regular visitor to Trove, I'm looking forward to seeing the new website and have already booked in for the webinar.  I hope to post some feedback on the new website soon, after I have had some time to explore.
